St. George Migrant Resource Centre
Delivering

well-built resources

for

service

providers.

BRIEF:  Our design agency was approached by project officers at the St. George Migrant Resource Centre to help them design and produce a comprehensive pictorial tool kit.

Their initial concept centred around developing a kit that would be put to use as a communications tool for service recipients from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds or for service recipients who are non verbal.

While the Kit was being translated into 14 community languages, our team consulted with the staff at SGMRC on how best to approach the delivery of this kit in a user-friendly format for both the service providers and recipients.

After several concept iterations we agreed that a digital format delivered on disc both in its entirety as well as divided into categories, would be the best option. Service providers could print off the relevant categories pertaining to the work they provide and use the pages as communication tools.

SGMRC explained that communication barriers continue to be a primary hindrance to members of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in their pursuit of access to support services. These support services are vital to maintaining an appropriate standard of life and independence within the broader community.

Our team found this a particularly touching project and from the out-set felt that in helping to design this Kit, we could positively impact the lives of service recipients.

DESIGN DELIVERABLES:  The Kit itself assists in communicating, with both translations and visual aids, the key services, objects and needs of the clients. Essentially any service-provider can use the printed slides to ask non-English speaking or non-verbal clients questions or explain what services they are rendering. The categories cover gardening and maintenance, house cleaning and domestic assistance to health, activities and much more.

Our team developed and sourced hundreds of coloured illustrations and easily understood symbols to accompany a short description in English. Each slide contained the image and description, alongside 14 cells with translations for each language.

It was essential to design a clean template that could contain all this information per slide, but divide the content into a comprehensible layout. These were sorted and divided into the relevant categories, with the final Kit reaching 400 pages in length.

RESULTS:  Arcaeon has the facilities for developing projects like this from concept right through to production. And we designed and produced for SGMRC hundreds of discs containing the Kit in clear Slim-line CD jewel cases with a 2-page Cover Insert, printed, packed and delivered straight to their door shortly after sign-off.
